A great start to the year as Hesperus narrowly won the first Parade! Well done to all the boys for their efforts - all that practice and time spent polishing shoes was well spent!

- We discussed this article and the life lessons we can learn from marching at Pangbourne http://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/the-filter/10890075/Trooping-the-Colour-6-life-lessons-you-can-learn-from-the-drill-square.html
Paintball Trip
Hesperus faced Port Jackson in the annual Pangbourne College Paintball Trip. With a young squad Hesperus struggled in the first two games as the more experienced PJ squad outmanoeuvred us. However, the boys began to find their range in game 3 as we successfully prevent PJ moving a flag to our base. Our strong defence was led by the Lower Sixth with the assistance of Mr Paynter issuing orders safe in the knowledge that he was out of range (he spent long periods hiding behind a tank).
In the final game Hesperus had to attack PJ and get our flag into their base. Finally we devised some tactics and attacks down the left and right flanks proved too much for PJ. The game was won when Mr Paynter finally broke cover to take advantage of a weak defence and plant our flag.
A really fun morning and a good way to spend the first Sunday of the year.

Hesperus Muster
These were very good, particularly at GCSE and AS Level. I don't want to mention individuals because there are so many who can be proud of their efforts. What was clear, however, is that those students who really put 100% effort into their work throughout last year achieved the success they deserved.
Hesperus Aims & Ethos
Aims
Last year Hesperus students (Hesperoids) decided the following 5 words best explain our ethos:
Have a great year!
SDCH
- Welcome to the new 3rd Form students and welcome back to students in Forms 4 - U6!
- Hesperus has a brilliant group of pupils this year and I'm sure we are going to enjoy even more individual and collective success than last year. All I ask is that you give your full effort to every piece of work and activity you undertake.
- I hope you enjoyed Les Miserables last night. As expected, your behaviour was perfect and I think it was a great way to start the year. A particular well done to the U6 who ran last night's trip and demonstrated outstanding leadership.
- The Mess Hall has been decorated and looks brilliant. The Sixth Form queue to the right and Forms 3-5 queue to the left. Please say well done to Catering Manager Iain Headley when you see him.
- We have a paintball trip this Sunday. Please let me know if you would like to attend.

Les Miserables
During the 2013-14 academic year if you spent any time in
Hesperus you were sure to hear the Lower Sixth singing along to the Les Miserables
soundtrack! The singing was often led by the dubious talents of GB Junior rower
Luke Towers and 1XV rugby player Stuart McLeish, however they were never short
of a supporting cast and a ‘Les Mis’ obsession quickly took hold of the house. Therefore,
when a start of term trip was planned last summer the Lower Sixth were quick to
demand that the whole house attended Les Miserables on the West End.
Fast forward three months to the 3rd September,
the first night of the year, and Hesperus with the ‘Les Mis fanatics’, now leading
the house in the Upper Sixth, boarded a coach with a group of parents, Hesperus
tutors and our Matron to watch the ‘World’s longest running musical’ at the
Queens Theatre, Shaftsbury Avenue. The trip was run entirely by the Upper Sixth
who were each in charge of a group of eight students made up from all Forms and
this proved a great opportunity for the senior boys to demonstrate their
leadership skills. Once in the theatre the sight of comedian Jimmy Carr sitting
two rows in front of us (house seats no doubt) provided a moment of excitement and
then the show began. Over the next three hours the boys were treated to an
array of powerful songs and outstanding staging. Apparently Luke Towers had to be restrained
from jumping on stage to join in. In between singing along I hope the boys were
also able to reflect on the show’s dark storyline and themes of desperation,
duty, love and sacrifice.
This house trip provided the Hesperus boys with a great
opportunity to watch a superb production and, perhaps more importantly, allowed
new and returning students to quickly feel part of the house community this year.
Well done to the Upper Sixth for their organisation and leadership and thank
you to parents who brought their sons in early and collected day boys at a quarter
past midnight!
