Muster 20/10/2015

Hesperus Muster

Praise
  • Well done to Ed Digby and Tom Perring who performed well for the Boat Club on Saturday.
  • A tough set of fixtures against Harrow on Saturday! Well done for being competitive.
  • Good luck to the Rugby squad leaving for Bordeaux tomorrow.
  • Congratulations to Andrej Ivanovic for his Music Scholarship.
Notices
  • With Seb Bearn away, Hugo Dwerryhouse spoke to the house about Remembrance Sunday and the importance of getting shoes, hair and uniform right after the half-term holiday.
  • The first weekend back is a busy one with the 1XV playing on the Friday night (all boarders to attend), Saturday fixtures and Remembrance on Sunday.
  • Thanks for your ideas in House Council - feedback was given to the boys.
House Inspection - Headmaster, 14/10/2015

Well done to the following boys for receiving 10/10:

Joe Bowden, William Fitchett, Charlie King, Ed Nash, Mo Rizwan, Oli Sale, Alex Spiers, Harri Doyle, Tommy Hessian, Kenny Xu, Louis Ellis, Charlie Riley, Seb Bearn, George Lacey, Matthew Montgomery, Alex O'Sullivan, Tom Perring

Student of the Week

Charlie Riley wins the Elvis trophy for his excellent effort, room tidiness and contribution to College life. Charlie's effort grades demonstrate the progress he has made from last year. Well done!

Top Effort Grades of the Half-Term

Hesperoids are challenged to achieve an average effort grade of 3.0 or above. The post below contains the list of pupils who achieved  this.

We also look at the average effort grades for each year:

3 Form - 2.6
4 Form - 3.1
5 Form - 2.9
L6 - 2.9
U6 - 3.0

House Average 2.9

A pretty good start but 3.0 is the target and we need to hit this at the end of term. Clearly the 3 Form have a bit more work to do!

Half-Term

It has been a busy seven weeks and everyone deserves a good rest. Please use the time well - some exercise, lots of sleep and spend time organising your files and reviewing your learning.

Make sure we finish the half-term well.

House Council

We held a House Council instead of Muster today. Here are the minutes and Mr Cane-Hardy's responses.....

Hesperus House Council
13th October 2015

Comment
Mr Cane-Hardy’s response

Can we have more bean bags in the day room?

Bean bags are ridiculously expensive so not at the moment. I will try to buy some more later in the year. You do have a sofa, chairs and two bean bags.

Boarders would like a bed side table

I agree this would be better and will speak to maintenance about this. I think this is also something for the school council.

Can boarders have personal pegs?

Another good idea – I will speak to Maintenance.
We’d like to have two enrichments slots for completing prep. At the moment one isn’t enough.

This is something to discuss at the School Council. Mr Williams will need to decide on this. The idea of the enrichment clubs is you get a breadth of experience. Is two a week enough? However, I am sympathetic, particularly to day boys, who want to get prep completed before the go home.
Can we have a Hesperus rugby ball?

Probably not – we have very nice Pangbourne rugby balls.
If someone get more than 6 Merits a week can they get a Dominos pizza?

It could get expensive and we already reward Merits with sweets. I will continue to award prizes to the top Merit performer in the house.

 4 Form

Can the Catering team provide more simple food?
Adam Cook can take this to the Food Committee.
Can we have more milk in the evenings?
I’ll speak to Gail about this.
Hesperus’ side door needs to have thicker glass to stop Nathan Wang’s head breaking it again.

Agreed – Nathan has an enormous melon and the new door will need to be reinforced to ensure he doesn’t head-butt his way through the glass again.
Can we have curly fries in the Mess Hall?

Hopefully - curly fries are incredible! Adam Cook can take this to the Food Committee.

 5 Form

Can we have disposable cups rather than the orange cups?
We discussed this last time. No because 1) it’s good for us to wash up after ourselves. 2) it means less rubbish for Jack to clear away 3) it’s more cost effective.

Better curtains throughout Hesperus
I agree the Hesperus curtains aren’t particularly attractive but they keep the sun / cold out and getting new ones is not a priority at the moment. Sorry!

Can the College provide shampoo dispensers in the showers?
This is a good item for the School Council.
Can we start Secret Santa much earlier this year so we have time to prepare?
Agreed – Mr Paynter is in charge of the Secret Santa and I’ll ask him to organise this earlier.

 Lower 6

Can we have Hesperus sweatshirts?
No (we discussed why last time)

Can the sweets in Muster be bigger?
We have larger sweets for Merits. Sweets are smaller for room inspections because it is easier to get a 10. I also don’t want to give you too much rubbish to eat.

Can we have better coffee in the galley?
This obviously came from our coffee connoisseur Tom Nash. Please provide me (a coffee ignoramus) with suggestions.

Why don’t we have bread on a Saturday and Sunday?
I’m not sure – I’ll speak to Gail.
We’d like more hot chocolate in the galley?
I’ll speak to Gail.

 Upper Sixth

Harbinger has a house flag – why can’t we have one?
Harbinger have lots of things we don’t have (gym, air hockey, TV room, computer room). However, we are better than them! I’ll find out where Mr Sutton got theirs from.

Can we have Hesperus congers?
Great idea – when? I want us to host a Christmas concert this year. We need to discuss.

Hesperus from the air

Thank you to Matthew Montgomery who took these excellent photos of Hesperus and the College from his drone. I think these photos highlight three things:
  1. What a beautiful building Hesperus is.
  2. How lucky we are to live and work in such beautiful surroundings.
  3. How Hesperus slants significantly from left to right!
