A
titanic tussle between two very physical teams ultimately ended with the U15’s
going through to the regional final of the NatWest Vase. With the
Gloucestershire skies turning ominously purple and whipping up a storm, the
stage was set for a compellingly spiky, belligerent encounter and the 2 packs
battled it out with controlled aggression. The collisions, especially with
their fast and powerful number 8 could be heard on the touchline. Ollie
Jones, James Matthewman, Will CT, Zac Leonard and Hari Clarke Jones led the
defence with fearless tackling. Ed Rimmer scored a try with electric
pace, and Oli Jones deserved his breakaway try. But with his outside break and
strong hand-off Matt Atkins again made scoring tries look easy as he picked up
a very classy brace, before finding himself with another brace of the neck variety,
as he tried to tackle their 14 stone prop with his head. The most pleasing
aspect of the game was the courage, determination and resilient attitude in
defence. The team spirit is phenomenal and the hallowed turf of Twickenham is
within our sights. They face Clevdon this Thursday on Whites in their regional
final.
1st XV
The 1st XV faced a strong Brockenhurst side in the semi final of the regional NatWest vase. Pangbourne started strongly opening the scoring with a well worked team try, James Baker diving over from close range. The home side quickly hit back with a strong driving maul, a strength they played too and which the conditions suited. At the break Pangbourne led 8-5 after playing up the slope on a mud bath of a pitch. Brockenhurst eventually broke the Red armies line with another driving maul but massive credit must go the boys for some heroic defence prior to the try. In the dying minutes Pangbourne had the chance to win it after turning over a scrum but the ball agonisingly went into touch metres from the line. It sadly brought and end to what has been a fantastic effort from these bunch of players. The passion and pride shown to wear the Pangbourne crest on their chest is second to none and every single one of them should be proud of what they've achieved, and been excellent ambassadors for Pangbourne rugby in the process.
