Mr
Cane-Hardy’s response
|
Can we have
more bean bags in the day room?
|
Bean
bags are ridiculously expensive so not at the moment. I will try to buy some
more later in the year. You do have a sofa, chairs and two bean bags.
|
Boarders would
like a bed side table
|
I
agree this would be better and will speak to maintenance about this. I think
this is also something for the school council.
|
Can boarders
have personal pegs?
|
Another
good idea – I will speak to Maintenance.
|
We’d like to
have two enrichments slots for completing prep. At the moment one isn’t
enough.
|
This
is something to discuss at the School Council. Mr Williams will need to
decide on this. The idea of the enrichment clubs is you get a breadth of
experience. Is two a week enough? However, I am sympathetic, particularly to
day boys, who want to get prep completed before the go home.
|
Can we have a
Hesperus rugby ball?
|
Probably
not – we have very nice Pangbourne rugby balls.
|
If someone get
more than 6 Merits a week can they get a Dominos pizza?
|
It
could get expensive and we already reward Merits with sweets. I will continue
to award prizes to the top Merit performer in the house.
|
Can the
Catering team provide more simple food?
|
Adam
Cook can take this to the Food Committee.
|
Can we have
more milk in the evenings?
|
I’ll
speak to Gail about this.
|
Hesperus’ side
door needs to have thicker glass to stop Nathan Wang’s head breaking it
again.
|
Agreed
– Nathan has an enormous melon and the new door will need to be reinforced to
ensure he doesn’t head-butt his way through the glass again.
|
Can we have
curly fries in the Mess Hall?
|
Hopefully
- curly fries are incredible! Adam Cook can take this to the Food Committee.
|
Can we have
disposable cups rather than the orange cups?
|
We
discussed this last time. No because 1) it’s good for us to wash up after
ourselves. 2) it means less rubbish for Jack to clear away 3) it’s more cost
effective.
|
Better curtains
throughout Hesperus
|
I
agree the Hesperus curtains aren’t particularly attractive but they keep the
sun / cold out and getting new ones is not a priority at the moment. Sorry!
|
Can the College
provide shampoo dispensers in the showers?
|
This
is a good item for the School Council.
|
Can we start
Secret Santa much earlier this year so we have time to prepare?
|
Agreed
– Mr Paynter is in charge of the Secret Santa and I’ll ask him to organise
this earlier.
|
Can we have
Hesperus sweatshirts?
|
No
(we discussed why last time)
|
Can the sweets
in Muster be bigger?
|
We
have larger sweets for Merits. Sweets are smaller for room inspections
because it is easier to get a 10. I also don’t want to give you too much
rubbish to eat.
|
Can we have
better coffee in the galley?
|
This
obviously came from our coffee connoisseur Tom Nash. Please provide me (a
coffee ignoramus) with suggestions.
|
Why don’t we
have bread on a Saturday and Sunday?
|
I’m
not sure – I’ll speak to Gail.
|
We’d like more
hot chocolate in the galley?
|
I’ll
speak to Gail.
|
Harbinger has a
house flag – why can’t we have one?
|
Harbinger
have lots of things we don’t have (gym, air hockey, TV room, computer room).
However, we are better than them! I’ll find out where Mr Sutton got theirs
from.
|
Can we have
Hesperus congers?
|
Great
idea – when? I want us to host a Christmas concert this year. We need to discuss.
|
Hesperus from the air
Thank you to Matthew Montgomery who took these excellent photos of Hesperus and the College from his drone. I think these photos highlight three things:
- What a beautiful building Hesperus is.
- How lucky we are to live and work in such beautiful surroundings.
- How Hesperus slants significantly from left to right!

Hesperoids are achieving some brilliant things. Well done to the following:
Well done to the following boys who received 10/10 this morning:

Merits
Please see post below. Hesperus are way behind the top of the league table and we need to start amassing Merits!
Student of the Week
Our House Scholar, Finn Slevin, awarded the Elvis trophy to Jamie Perring for his consistent effort, organisation and contribution.
Seb Bearn
Our Chief spoke to the boys about the Pringle competition, parade and Merits.
Areas to focus on....
A lot of us have been watching England lose at Rugby in the last week but it's worth reminding ourselves that England used to be good. In 2002 England were the best team in the world and the coach, Clive Woodward, had clear guidelines for the team. He called them his 10 Commandments and a number of them can apply to Hesperus....
1 Dress Must be presentable at all times.
2 Language No swearing in public.
3 Governors Team representatives to liaise with management.
4 Punctuality Must be 10 minutes early for meetings.
5 Selection Omitted players must congratulate their rivals.
6 Mobile phones Must not be seen or heard in team hotel.
7 Books/press No dirt-dishing articles (apply this to Facebook)
8 365 days England players are never off duty.
9 Be present Don't just turn up, make a contribution.
10 Fun Work must be enjoyable.

Pupil Praise
Hesperoids are achieving some brilliant things. Well done to the following:
- The Pringle Team for their success last weekend.
- Hugo Dwerryhouse and the Upper 6 for leading the Division so well on parade.
- The Rugby club for some excellent wins against Mill Hill - in the next week the 1XV have fixtures against Shiplake, Stowe and Harrow - good luck.
- The numerous boys who are working really hard to combine their music and sporting commitments in the afternoons - it is not always easy!
- Tom Perring who won in the doubles event at Reading Small Boats Head on Saturday.
- Louis Winter and Sam Holloway who achieved strong marks on their Drama Trinity exam.
- The following boys were selected for September's Headmaster's XV - Tom Paine, Seth Grieve, Sam Holloway and Alex Spiers.
- There have been some disappointing cases of cutlery being damaged at lunch time. Please make sure you're not involved and remember that this could cause a nasty injury to the excellent catering staff who wash up.
- A reminder of our mobile phone etiquette - you shouldn't be looking at your phone between lessons or in the Mess Hall.
- If you have Music lessons please make sure you turn up for lessons. They are expensive and your parents are charged for missed lessons.
Well done to the following boys who received 10/10 this morning:

Areas to focus on....
- The 6 Form must ensure they are using Study Periods effectively.
- Our punctuality needs to improve. If a lesson starts at 11.25 we need to be in the classroom, not just leaving Hesperus.

Rugby Report
Pangbourne College Rugby Club Report
Week 5
The has been an excellent week for the rugby club with 7 wins and only 3 losses, but it isn't just the score lines which has impressed but the attitude of the boys around the school and the manner in which they trained.
The U15s won their Natwest Cup match versus Great Marlow School comfortably by 40 points to 10 on Wednesday. They progress to the next round and will play Sir William Borlase School next week. The 1st XV also were in cup action as they took on local school Theale Green. With many of the 2nd involved in the squad, the 70 points to 3 victory was a superb result.
On Saturday, the excellent rugby continued against Mill Hill. The U14s put on a good show and even though it was only a winning day for the As, both teams should be incredibly proud of their efforts. The 'Team of the Week' goes to the entire U15 squad. Both teams beat Mill Hill but in very different ways. The As cruised to a comfortable 70-0 victory but the Bs were just as impressive, fighting their way to a 5-0 victory. Success continued at the top of the school with the 2nd XV, who won 19-10, and the afternoon was rounded off by a 62-3 victory for our 1st XV.
Alongside the rugby, this week also saw the publishing of the inaugural 'Headmaster's XV', a monthly prize given to 15 members of the rugby club who have shown great commitment to the college, both on and off the field. This month nominations were Jamie Chilver-Stainer, Sam Holloway, Falk Von Wendorff, Jake Easton, Bastien Hamilton, Seth Grieve, Tom Paine, Alex Spiers, Jonah Rossiter, Dan Simmons, Arslan Dzhumamudarov, Cameron Barr, Jason Griffin, Myles Ward & Fergus Walker. Well done to these boys and a massive thank you for your efforts. I look forward to the nominations for October at the end of the month!
This coming week is crucial in allowing all teams to build up to the Shiplake game on Saturday. The rivalry between the schools stems back many years and I hope that all members of the rugby club can get some quality training in before the weekend. Good luck and thank you for your efforts so far this year.
