House Council

Hesperus House Council

10th November 2015

Here are the minutes and Mr Cane-Hardy’s responses from Tuesday’s House Council.

Mr Cane-Hardy’s response

Can day boys be rated individually in house inspections?

Rooms are inspected rather than individuals. It is the day boys’ responsibility to ensure everyone tidies their own area.

Can we have desks in the 3 Form day room?

There isn’t space. I’m conscious that there isn’t a designated area for 3 Form day boys to work in Hesperus during the day. Perhaps the library would be the best option?

Can we have more pictures in the 3 Form area?
There are lots of pictures and I’d be happy for pupils to bring in their own if they want more – obviously I’ll need to check these before they go up!

Can we have some room perfume to make the 3 Form area smell better?

Rather than perfume let’s focus on getting our basic hygiene sorted! Shower every day, put dirty clothes in the laundry and use deodorant….

If this fails I’ll buy some nice scented candles.

We’d prefer proper butter rather than margarine in the galley.
I’m sure you would! This is something for the Food Committee (Adam Cook) but I’d certainly be in favour.

Can we have more chocolate digestives and custard creams at break time?
I’ll speak to Gail – not all the houses have biscuits at break.

Prep sessions should have an ICT room open and supervised. A lot of prep is set on computers and there aren’t enough computers in Hesperus.
This is something I’m very conscious of and I’ll speak to Mr Williams. Also something that should go to the School Council (Finn Slevin & Jake Evans).

Can we wear our own coats in winter?
Again, this is something for the School Council. I think there is an issue with the No. 2 uniform. When it gets really cold the HM will call ‘arctic order’ and you can then wear your coats. In the meantime you can wear Pangbourne waterproofs over your jumpers – this should keep you pretty warm.

 5 Form

No super minis for Merits!
We know you hated the (Aldi’s own) super mini chocolates. Gail has got Celebrations for next week.

The towel dispenser in the middle floor bathroom doesn’t work.
I’ll speak to Gail
Can we have a hand dryer?
This is something for the School Council.

Not all the radiators are working.
Please tell me and Gail which are not working and ask Maintenance to fix.

 Lower Sixth

Can we have bread on Saturday?
I thought we are having bread on Saturdays now. There was certainly three loafs in the Galley on Saturday night.

More hot chocolate in the galley
Didn’t we discuss this last time? You get one tub of hot chocolate per week. Is the coffee better now?

Can the Music School be open one more night a week?
This was raised in the School Council last week and I believe Mr Raby said they could only staff two nights a week (Monday and Thursday). I suggest using Enrichment time to practice. I do think it would be good to have the Music School open on Sundays and I’ll speak to him.

Can we have lemon curd biscuits?
I’ll speak to Gail – why is there such an obsession with biscuits?

 Upper Sixth

Can we have a house hair trimmer?
This is a weird request. I hope you are asking so you can trim hair before a College Sunday? If not, then I don’t want to know why…..

Either way the answer is no. Hesperoids need to take responsibility for their appearance on parade. If hair is too long then boys need to arrange a (proper) haircut.

Can we start Hesperus house runs in the morning?
Good idea. My hamstrings are feeling tight at the moment so perhaps Mr Paynter can lead this?

Why don’t we start next Tuesday at 6.45?

Not all the radiators are working
See above – we need to know which ones.

Can Angus Findlay replace Mr Cane-Hardy as Housemaster?
Great idea – Angus would bring so much to the role. He definitely has better ‘chat’ than me.

I’ve ordered a new TV remote and new table tennis bats to replace the broken ones. Please look after these.
