Rugby Report

Week 12 saw the rugby club take on their local rival, Oratory school. With less than 5 miles between the two schools it is a true derby and always a competitive fixture. Last year, the rugby club did not perform well, losing all but one of their matches. However, this year the effort put in by the boys and coaches throughout the season showed and Pangbourne took the block, winning 5 games out of the 8 played. This, combined with 1 game which was lost by just one point, is incredibly encouraging.

The U14A played fast, skilful and well organised rugby. Their defence was solid and some huge performances by several boys saw them run out as comfortable 29-17 winners. The U14Bs had a tough afternoon but played some good rugby as well.

The U15s take the title of squad of the week, winning their games at both A and B team level. The A team continue their superb season with a 48-0 thrashing of their opposition but the Bs, who suffered a huge defeat as U14s, showed incredible improvement, running in an unanswered 32 points this time around!

At U16 level, the matches were incredibly close. The B team won a tight match 14-12, a long range run in by Jake Lawrence sealing the victory. Unfortunately the A team couldn't get the win, but losing by just one point, 18-19, was a respectable scoreline and they continue to play some excellent rugby.

At the senior end of the club, the 2nd XV continue their winning ways with an 8-5 win, their 5th of the season. The 1st XV had a torrid afternoon. With the weather playing its part they struggled to get a foothold in attack but their defence was outstanding, keeping the Oratory at bay for long periods of the game. Unfortunately they couldn't cross the line and the game finished as an 8-3 loss.

This week, we look forward to hosting Sir William Borlase School and Leighton Park on Wednesday, the 1st XV travel to Dr Challoner's School for their next Natwest Vase game and then we build towards another tough block against Worth School next Saturday.

Once again there were a huge number of 10s - this is a really good indication of tidiness and organisation. Well done.

Merits

Please see post below.

Flag Value Awards

The U6 awarded this award to Tom Paine for his resilience in completing a 10K run on Sunday and coming in the top 50 of 300 runners and Toby Woollen for the integrity he demonstrates through his contribution to the Marching Band and the College's music.

Student of the Week

Finn Slevin awarded the Elvis trophy to Sam Holloway for his outstanding effort and levels of contribution. Sam was part of the Marching Band performing at the Lord Mayor's Show on Saturday and took part in a Drama rehearsal on Sunday.

Paris Terror Attacks

We discussed the atrocities in Paris on Friday night and it was suggested the boys should spend some time understanding what Islamic State (Daesh) is and what it wants to achieve. This article gives a good outline of the terror group - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-29052144

Rugby Report

As the weather closes in, the rugby club keeps going, training hard and playing some tough matches. Last week was no exception with Natwest Cup matches and block fixtures v Lord Wandsworth.

The U15As headed to Aylesbury Grammar School on Wednesday for a tough Natwest Cup game. They played incredibly well and, only 10-7 down at half time were in the game. Unfortunately they could not sustain their efforts and Aylesbury came out as eventual winners.

Also on Wednesday the U14, U15 and U16B teams headed to Lord Wandsworth for their fixtures. They all played well, showing true Pangbourne spirit. The highlight of the afternoon was the U14Bs 12-12 draw - their first result of the season.

The rest of the rugby club faced Lord Wandsworth on Saturday in horrendous conditions. The U14/15C team played touch, ensuring every 3rd and 4th form boy had the opportunity to represent the school and the rugby club. The U14A played well but couldn't cross the line, losing 12-0. The U15As bounced back from their cup loss to put their opposition to the sword running in an unanswered 41 points. The U16A also continued their impressive second half of the season, running out as 10-0 victors. The team hasn't conceded a point in their last 320 minutes of rugby - an impressive feat.

The seniors enjoyed mixed fortunes with the second XV winning 17-10 and the 1st XV going down 18-11, a game which they deserved more from.

House Council

Hesperus House Council

10th November 2015

Here are the minutes and Mr Cane-Hardy’s responses from Tuesday’s House Council.

3 Form

Comment
Mr Cane-Hardy’s response

Can day boys be rated individually in house inspections?

Rooms are inspected rather than individuals. It is the day boys’ responsibility to ensure everyone tidies their own area.

Can we have desks in the 3 Form day room?

There isn’t space. I’m conscious that there isn’t a designated area for 3 Form day boys to work in Hesperus during the day. Perhaps the library would be the best option?

Can we have more pictures in the 3 Form area?
There are lots of pictures and I’d be happy for pupils to bring in their own if they want more – obviously I’ll need to check these before they go up!

Can we have some room perfume to make the 3 Form area smell better?

Rather than perfume let’s focus on getting our basic hygiene sorted! Shower every day, put dirty clothes in the laundry and use deodorant….

If this fails I’ll buy some nice scented candles.

 4 Form

We’d prefer proper butter rather than margarine in the galley.
I’m sure you would! This is something for the Food Committee (Adam Cook) but I’d certainly be in favour.

Can we have more chocolate digestives and custard creams at break time?
I’ll speak to Gail – not all the houses have biscuits at break.

Prep sessions should have an ICT room open and supervised. A lot of prep is set on computers and there aren’t enough computers in Hesperus.
This is something I’m very conscious of and I’ll speak to Mr Williams. Also something that should go to the School Council (Finn Slevin & Jake Evans).

Can we wear our own coats in winter?
Again, this is something for the School Council. I think there is an issue with the No. 2 uniform. When it gets really cold the HM will call ‘arctic order’ and you can then wear your coats. In the meantime you can wear Pangbourne waterproofs over your jumpers – this should keep you pretty warm.

 5 Form

No super minis for Merits!
We know you hated the (Aldi’s own) super mini chocolates. Gail has got Celebrations for next week.

The towel dispenser in the middle floor bathroom doesn’t work.
I’ll speak to Gail
Can we have a hand dryer?
This is something for the School Council.

Not all the radiators are working.
Please tell me and Gail which are not working and ask Maintenance to fix.

 Lower Sixth

Can we have bread on Saturday?
I thought we are having bread on Saturdays now. There was certainly three loafs in the Galley on Saturday night.

More hot chocolate in the galley
Didn’t we discuss this last time? You get one tub of hot chocolate per week. Is the coffee better now?

Can the Music School be open one more night a week?
This was raised in the School Council last week and I believe Mr Raby said they could only staff two nights a week (Monday and Thursday). I suggest using Enrichment time to practice. I do think it would be good to have the Music School open on Sundays and I’ll speak to him.

Can we have lemon curd biscuits?
I’ll speak to Gail – why is there such an obsession with biscuits?

 Upper Sixth

Can we have a house hair trimmer?
This is a weird request. I hope you are asking so you can trim hair before a College Sunday? If not, then I don’t want to know why…..

Either way the answer is no. Hesperoids need to take responsibility for their appearance on parade. If hair is too long then boys need to arrange a (proper) haircut.

Can we start Hesperus house runs in the morning?
Good idea. My hamstrings are feeling tight at the moment so perhaps Mr Paynter can lead this?

Why don’t we start next Tuesday at 6.45?

Not all the radiators are working
See above – we need to know which ones.

Can Angus Findlay replace Mr Cane-Hardy as Housemaster?
Great idea – Angus would bring so much to the role. He definitely has better ‘chat’ than me.

I’ve ordered a new TV remote and new table tennis bats to replace the broken ones. Please look after these.
