Rowing Report for
School Assembly
Monday 22nd June 2015
A large contingent of predominantly junior crews raced at
Marlow Town regatta on Saturday 14th June. On the boys’ front, two
J14 octuples raced well, with the ‘A’ crew finishing a strong second in its
heat, a J15 double nearly made the final, and a Novice eight rowed a spirited
race. On the girls’ front, our two J14 crews had their first ever racing
experience and the stars of the show were our J15 girls, who raced well in four
finals, including two against National Schools’ medalists, and winning J15
eights over Bryanston. Yesterday, at Reading Town regatta, our J14 girls showed
that they had already moved on, reaching the final in a quad, having beaten two
crews in their heat to reach it. Felix Wahlberg did likewise, in reaching the
final of J15 sculls.
A week ago, at Reading Amateur regatta, the Girls’ 1st
eight had a good row in Intermediate 2 eights but were eventually out powered
by Kent School, USA, who showed their pedigree at Henley Women’s regatta
yesterday in losing narrowly to Headington School in the final. Pangbourne had
a fast start in their heat against Branksome Hall, Canada, stretching their
lead to a length at one point, only to be overhauled by the fast finishing
Canadians in the final third of the race. Two OPs, Georgia Francis and Emily
Wilks, were in winning crews at the regatta.
A double of Felix Lammers and Rory Harris from our top boy’s
quad won Intermediate 1 doubles at Reading Amateur, our highest status win in
sculling to date, while Luke Towers was recovering from tonsillitis and Andrin
Gulich away in Switzerland earning a place in the Swiss Junior team to race at
the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Szeged, Hungary this summer. Impressively, Andrin
was in the fastest coxless four in all eleven 1500 metre trials.
Later this week, the Pangbourne eight will try to qualify for
Henley Royal Regatta, to join the quad, which has pre-qualified.
