Rowing Report
Rowing Report for
School Assembly
Monday 22nd June 2015
A large contingent of predominantly junior crews raced at
Marlow Town regatta on Saturday 14th June. On the boys’ front, two
J14 octuples raced well, with the ‘A’ crew finishing a strong second in its
heat, a J15 double nearly made the final, and a Novice eight rowed a spirited
race. On the girls’ front, our two J14 crews had their first ever racing
experience and the stars of the show were our J15 girls, who raced well in four
finals, including two against National Schools’ medalists, and winning J15
eights over Bryanston. Yesterday, at Reading Town regatta, our J14 girls showed
that they had already moved on, reaching the final in a quad, having beaten two
crews in their heat to reach it. Felix Wahlberg did likewise, in reaching the
final of J15 sculls.
A week ago, at Reading Amateur regatta, the Girls’ 1st
eight had a good row in Intermediate 2 eights but were eventually out powered
by Kent School, USA, who showed their pedigree at Henley Women’s regatta
yesterday in losing narrowly to Headington School in the final. Pangbourne had
a fast start in their heat against Branksome Hall, Canada, stretching their
lead to a length at one point, only to be overhauled by the fast finishing
Canadians in the final third of the race. Two OPs, Georgia Francis and Emily
Wilks, were in winning crews at the regatta.
A double of Felix Lammers and Rory Harris from our top boy’s
quad won Intermediate 1 doubles at Reading Amateur, our highest status win in
sculling to date, while Luke Towers was recovering from tonsillitis and Andrin
Gulich away in Switzerland earning a place in the Swiss Junior team to race at
the Coupe de la Jeunesse in Szeged, Hungary this summer. Impressively, Andrin
was in the fastest coxless four in all eleven 1500 metre trials.
Later this week, the Pangbourne eight will try to qualify for
Henley Royal Regatta, to join the quad, which has pre-qualified.

Battle of Waterloo
On Thursday June 18 it is the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo. This is one of the most significant battles in British history and you should know why it took place and what happened. I have sent you a link which explains this so please take the time to research.
Cricket
Some of you have been watching the one day cricket matches between England and New Zealand. These have been interesting because England have finally caught up with the rest of the world and are playing more ambitious and attacking cricket.
Until this series England have not changed their style for many years and were happy scoring
250-300 from 50 overs. New Zealand, Australia, India and South Africa were trying to score
400 from 50 overs. England failed to react to this change and fell behind.
We can learn from this. You must never stand still and think 'what i'm doing works so i'll keep
doing it' - you should always try to improve and think how can we get better. I hope you will all think about this during the summer and come back in September with clear ideas.

Praise
- Well done to the boys who helped with the Falkland Islands Memorial Service: Kenny Xu, Louis Winter, Rylan Li, Nathan Wang, Finn Slevin, Olly Chapman, Harry Farrant, Joe Holloran.
- The 3 & 4 Form Div. Cricket team played really well on Saturday and lost to Macquarie on the last ball. However, it was a good game.
- A number of Silver Duke of Edinburgh certificates were handed out to Lower Sixth students.
Notices
- Make sure you hand your No. 1 uniform to Gail by the end of the week if you want it dry cleaned before Founders' Day. Uniform needs to be perfect so I strongly recommend.
- Lower Sixth mock interviews are taking place today. Good luck and make sure you look smart!
- The swimming pool is open tonight from 8.30 - 9.30.
- Exam week for Forms 3 & 4 begins next week.
Room Inspection - Headmaster, 12/6/15
Well done to the following boys who received 10/10:
Harri Doyle, Tommy Hessian, Nick White, Louis Winter, Kenny Xu, Ed Chapman, Tom Hird, Ollie Newcombe, Hugo Dwerryhouse, Alex O'Sullivan, Alex Carr, Charles Guest

House Council Minutes
Instead of a Muster today we held a House Council. The boys split into year groups and their comments and my responses are below:
SDCH
3 Form
·
Can we have headboards on our beds? (SDCH:
A very reasonable request, I will ask for this to be done)
·
The light in the big dorm is broken (SDCH:
I’ve emailed for this to be fixed)
·
Can we put food from the tuck shop on the school
bill? (SDCH: See what your parents say…)
·
Can we play football as a school sport? (SDCH:
This is a decision for the Headmaster and Director of Sport – a good item for
School Council.)
4 Form
·
Why don’t we have fruit anymore? (SDCH:
We don’t have enough money in the Hesperus budget! Fruit will be back in
September. You can still get fruit from the Mess Hall at breakfast, lunch and
supper.)
·
We have a waffle machine but no batter (SDCH:
Batter is provided on Friday nights but feel free to bring in your own batter
if you’d like to use the waffle maker at lunchtime and evenings)
·
Can we have colour ink for the printer? (SDCH:
Too expensive – see comment on fruit)
·
Why is Seth hair so bad? (SDCH: Very good question.
Seth’s hair is an abomination)
·
Is the school planning to renovate the Study Block?
(SDCH:
Not sure – something to take to the school council. Like Hesperus the study
block is a practical, not beautiful, building)
5 Form
·
The galley tidying rota is annoying (SDCH:
Wash up after yourselves then)
·
More toasties (SDCH: I suspect it would be too
expensive – good item for the food committee though)
·
Can we replace the carpet downstairs? (SDCH:
I will certainly request this for the summer)
·
Hesperus Flag (SDCH: Probably not)
·
Hesperus shorts (SDCH: We are getting new shirts so
shorts will have to wait)
Lower 6
·
The showers on the middle floor are too hot (SDCH:
I’ve emailed Lewis – they were too cold last time so hopefully we’ll find some
middle ground)
·
We need a new carpet downstairs (SDCH:
see above)
·
Can we end the house nights on a Friday – we’d
rather go out (SDCH: I’ll speak to the other Housemasters about this_)
Upper 6
·
Hesperus needs a gravity chamber, slushy machine,
soft ball pool and should be sound proofed (SDCH: Great ideas – when are you
leaving?)
Ideas for Sunday trips
·
Thorpe Park
·
Reading (but catch train in rather than minibus)
·
Punting in Oxford
·
Paintballing
·
Airsoft
·
Go ape

Boat Club: 60th Anniversary Celebrations
The Boat Club
celebrated its 60th Anniversary with an afternoon’s rowing that
included any OPs who wished to take to the water, followed by a dinner in Mess
Hall.
Having handed over the
new eight “Spirit of ‘63” that they had so generously donated to the Boat Club,
the crew, complete with their coach and with substitute Luke Towers, took to
the water in it. Although septuagenarians (apart from Luke), they still showed
the poise and teamwork that had taken them to victory in the Princess Elizabeth
Cup at Henley and paved the way for future generations to achieve three further
successes in that event to date, a record bettered only by Eton. They were then
joined by another predominantly OP crew of mixed vintage and our girls’ 1st
VIII. To remind us of the biggest change in Pangbourne rowing in recent years –
the addition of girls’ crews – the girls showed the other eights their
sprinting ability in a series of short bursts.
Before the Dinner, “The
Spirit of ‘63”, together with two other boats named after members of the ‘63
crew, was formally named by our Guest Speaker, reigning Olympic, World, World
Cup, European and British champion, not to mention Olympic, World and European
record holder, Captain Heather Stanning, MBE. Heather, who is successfully
combining a career in the Royal Artillery with unprecedented rowing success,
mirrored the path blazing of the ’63 crew, along with Helen Glover in a coxless
pair their being the first ever British female Olympic Gold Medallists and the
first Gold Medallists of the 2012 London Olympics.
The Dinner itself
completed a memorable day, with nearly 160 OPs, Pangbournians, parents and
coaches present. The Headmaster pulled off an impressive coup in borrowing the
actual Princess Elizabeth Cup for the occasion – a magnificent trophy worth
many thousands of pounds. There was an excellent atmosphere and four great
speeches by Julian Coles, stroke of the ’63 crew, Tegan Foister and Luke
Towers, the Captains of Boats, and by Heather Stanning.
Special thanks must go
to our own Olympian, who has also been World Champion, ex-Sportsperson in
Residence, Beth Rodford, who did much of the organising of this year’s dinner.
